Clear Cut Group Shares How Often To Water New Sod

sod installation

Newly laid sod covers bare or balding soil that cannot produce grass growth on its own. Clear Cut Group features coveted grass options like Kentucky Blue Grass to apply as sod. As Clear Cut Group explains below, new sod requires frequent watering to establish a robust root system.

How Often to Water New Laid Sod

The Clear Cut Group experts advise watering sod immediately upon installation. Saturate newly laid sod with no less than one inch of water within a half hour of installation. The soaking wet grass will seep down, helping the root system grab hold of the soil.

Water sod at least two times a day for the first two months, for at least half an hour per session. Furthermore, water your lawn first thing in the morning, as close to sunrise as possible. For the second daily watering, aim for a half hour between 3 to 5 pm.

Additionally, ensure that newly laid sod receives at least six inches of watering per session for the first two months.

How Often to Water Sod After Two Months

After two months, newly laid sod will have a dependable root system. The established roots will not need as much watering as before. Likewise, if the sod retains good signs of health, it will require fewer watering sessions.

Lower double sessions to once daily to get the sod accustomed to more infrequent waterings. After two weeks of once-a-day watering, switch to watering every other day. Then, monitor the sod regularly and water as needed.

The Clear Cut Group offers personalized advice on how often to water the sod.

Types of Irrigation Systems

To ease the watering process, consider installing an irrigation system. An irrigation system is a watering system that covers many lawn areas at once. Those with a busy schedule can especially benefit from this system, especially one recommended by the Clear Cut Group.

Sprinklers offer different watering methods at various price points. The two most common sprinklers are garden hose sprinklers and in-ground sprinklers.

Garden Hose Sprinklers

Garden hose sprinklers attach to the end of a hose and rotate back and forth. These sprinklers are highly affordable. In addition, a garden hose sprinkler is safe to use on newly laid sod.

In-Ground Sprinklers

In-ground sprinkler systems require an intense installation process that entails digging up the lawn. As a result, installation is best left to professionals such as the Clear Cut Group.

An in-ground sprinkler is a good option before laying new sod, but it is not possible after sod installation. It is also more expensive than a garden sprinkler hose, as it does all the watering independently.

Timers

For homeowners’ convenience, many timer options are available for both garden hose sprinklers and in-ground systems.

Rain Gauge

A rain gauge also tracks how much water sod receives. If the sod receives rainfall, a rain gauge factors that amount into daily watering amounts.

How to Avoid Underwatering

When fresh sod does not receive adequate water, it will wilt. Bald patches and stiff grass blades will emerge. The edges of the sod will raise and curl upwards.

Likewise, the root system will start to die. Without enough water, the roots cannot attach to the soil.

Turn to the Clear Cut Group professionals to ensure that newly laid sod has enough water each day.

How to Avoid Overwatering

It may seem counter-intuitive, but it is possible to overwater newly laid sod. Overwatering makes sod vulnerable to rotting and floating soil. In addition, the muddy ground does not give the root system enough grip for growth.

Stick to a consistent watering schedule to avoid overwatering. Additionally, ensure that watering times are within sunlight hours. Watering at night will not allow for ample drying time.
